Book of condolences

In what was a fantastic suggestion by one of our members, Mr. Desmond Heeney, we have decided to start a book of Condolences for Mary Raftery RIP.

As all Survivors are aware Mary Raftery spoke so passionatly and intelligently about Survivors Rights and Entitlements and was the driving force behind recognition for Survivors of this country. It is with this in mind that every Survivor and Supporter should acknowledge the wonderful legagy Mrs. Raftery left us with.

As a result we have started in each office in the country a book of condolences for Survivors / Supporters and family members to sign. Our intention is to bring this to Mrs. Rafterys family members to acknowldge the respect and high esteem so many held Mary in.

If you cannot get to your local office to sign the book, please leave a short message and your name on this page below and we will add it onto the book for you.

Alternatively each of our offices will be open for you to sign your name on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 am - 5 pm.

Desmond Heeney without Marys exposure of wrongdoing by the Catholic Church and the Irish Government it would not have seen the light of day. RIP.

I shed tears today, for we have lost an incredible human being, an immeasurable talent, whose reason d’être was justice and fairness to the most broken and vulnerable in our midst.

Mary, ‘codladh sámh’ now that your work here is done, you can rest peacefully assured that your legacy has touched real lives and shone a beacon that will enlighten generations to come. The trauma you exposed is inter-generational .. it remains in memory – and is at its most damaging when it is silent and unexposed.

On behalf of many who have never had the honour of meeting you but who were impressed by your dignified and courageous stance against insurmountable odds; you were our ‘David’ to Goliath – may I take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely and with heartfelt sympathy offer genuine condolences to the special people in your life, your partner, son, mum, extended family and your circle of friends and colleagues.

Breeda,

Very eloquently put. We can all remember and cherish the legacy that she has left us with. We can all continue the work that she started by ensuring Survivors Rights and entitlements are continually advanced.

Thanks your comment has been added.

Jack, Robert and Ellen,

Very nice comments and very well expressed. Fantastic to see the response this has received and it is a response truly deserving of the woman who done so much to highlight what so many citizens (non Survivors) knew about, but did not speak about or who were not listened to.

Your comments have been added.

Wishing everybody a fantastic 2012.

Regards,

To Mary,

Thank you for everything you have done. You forced the goverment to apologise and a real meaning investigatio to be done into irish gulags. You made the stories we all spoke about real and your book for the first time made people realise the true nature of what I and many suffered in these he'll holes.

You will never be forgotten and I hope to see you in heaven when I kick the bucket.

You will be missed, who will step up to fill your voice and continue the work you started?

To think you were not a Survivor, but you certanly fought for our rites like you were.

Mary, you rest in peace

Phillip O'Neill - Donegal

Mary was a true saint, there are many saints around us and Marys example shows what a saint does for the lives of others especially those who were made to suffer by the irish state.

One of Mary Raftery's goals was to give a voice to those who had none.
When you shake the very foundations of the state and religious authority... then you have indeed roared like a lion. And you did just that. Thanks
